Spices are how magic foods are created; each spice controls a specific part of the body, mind or world, and can dislike being in close proximity to another spice family if their effects are opposing (ex. Cedronian spices which control balance are opposed to being near Carnejian spices, due to Carnejians being unpredictable.)

It's known that spices can die out, however it's unclear if spices can be brought back (outside of the magic garden that was created by the Come Back Kombucha spell). The most significant instance of this is morbium, which only has 4 seeds known; the three given to the Original Cooks and the seed extracted from the Peizer's pie tin.

Morbium was previously in abundance in the 1800s, but by 1960 it had gone extinct. The Traveler gave the last 3 seeds to Becky Quinn, Gina Silvers and Ida Perez. Becky was the first to use it, amplifying a separation spell to break her and the other OCs' connection with the book. Gina's morbium was used to amplify a Kick-Em-Out Chicken Soup recipie to force Chuck Peizer out of Jake Williams' body, and Ida's was used to get into Jake's body by Chuck.

Grafted spices can create sub-levels of magic, and require 3 spices to graft together and must be compatible, otherwise the graft may be unstable or unusable. The primary example in Season 3 of JAM being Parquinnien, named after the New Protectors (Kelly, Darbie and Hannah.) It's known as the friendship spice, and can be used to break or separate connections.
